The Joel Embiid-Karl Anthony Towns Fight and Social Media Beef

Updated: Nov 3, 2019

Halloween day in Alice Springs. Archie Donohoe and I suffer through another PLP class at St Philip's, starting at around 11:20 am. I try to sneak glances at the Celtics-Bucks game on my laptop while Archie tries to hide his open YouTube tab on his from Ms Lee.

Archie decides he needs to see the 76ers-Timberwolves highlights (his favorite NBA is the Philadelphia 76ers), and after seeing Ben Simmons dunk about five times, I notice a commotion out of the corner of my eye, on Archie's screen. Archie tries to mask his visible excitement, but has to switch to his Biology report before Ms Lee sees what he is really doing.

Once she leaves, we rewind the video 10 seconds and I get to see what happened. Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers and Karl Anthony Towns (KAT) of the Minnesota Timberwolves went at each other after Embiid got a steal of KAT; and their arms got tied up together. They pushed each other until KAT had enough and kinda sorta tried to throw some punches at Embiid.

They wrestled each other to the ground, getting separated as coaches came to break it up under the basket. Right away Embiid allows himself to be restrained, but KAT wouldn't give up until Ben Simmons came and put him in a chokehold. Charles Barkley called the whole thing 'a snuggle fest', which just shows how dangerous the League was in the 80s and 90s.

But the real fight was just beginning.

After the game, in which both Embiid and KAT were ejected, Embiid said, "I ain't no b****" as well as, "That's what I'm good at -- I like to get in people's minds."

In a tweet and an Instagram post after the game, Embiid captioned a few pictures from the game with: "Great team win!!! I was raised around lions and a cat pulled on me tonight lmao @jimmybutler I missed being part of the third stringers... I got his mom giving middle fingers. That's some SERIOUS REAL ESTATE."

Of course, KAT also posted something after the game responding to Embiid. His post had the caption: 'I aIN’t nO B**** RaiSeD ARoUnD LiOns' with a bunch of cap emojis and clown emojis. Embiid commented, but of course Towns deleted the comment. Luckily, Embiid screenshotted it, and part of the comment said, "I ain't gonna put your business out but I got the facts about you. Don't get it twisted I OWN YOU."

Embiid then tweeted, "That tough guy act ain’t cutting it .... you know what you are.. you know what you’ve always been>>> A P**** (SAY IT LOUDER FOR PEOPLE IN THE BACK) Been kicking your a** and pretty please make the playoffs before you talk. It’s a known thing that I OWN YOU."

Anyways, Embiid and KAT were both suspended two games, and they're lucky it's not more. Simmons wasn't suspended, which is surprising since he was choking a dude but sure, whatever.

Obviously, the Timberwolves rejected the point of view that Simmons was a 'peacemaker', according to NBA league officials. NBA VP, Kiki VanDeWeghe, (and no, I have no idea how to pronounce his last name either) said that the "continued escalation following the incident" was taken into account.

Unfortunately, these two don't play until March, and I'm sure one will be 'resting' that game-aka ducking the other player-so we might not see a rematch at all.

Halloween was a crazy day in the NBA, lots of close games and news. The Celtics erased a 19 point deficit to beat the reigning MVP and the Milwaukee Bucks by 11 behind Kemba Walker's 32 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists.

Steph Curry broke his hand after Suns' center Aron Baynes landed on it (ouch), and it has been reported that he already had surgery and will be out for 3 months. Roll out the tanks!

The Sacramento Kings still haven't won a game yet (0-5), which is surprising considering that many NBA professional analysts had them making the playoffs.

The Rockets and the Wizards combined for 317 points in a 159-158 Rockets win in regulation, making it the 9th highest scoring game in NBA history, and six of the games ahead of it went to 2+ overtimes. James Harden has 59 points, and Russell Westbrook had another triple-double. Bradley Beal led the Wizards in scoring, with 43 points. Isaiah Thomas looked like his old self, with 17 points and 10 assists in 24 minutes.

Anyways, it was a great drama-filled day in the NBA, and hopefully there are many, many more just like it.
