I was starting to think I had ran out of good stories to write, but Air Jordan came through.
When Jordan was picking his top 4 players to play with, all time, on NBC, he chose Scottie Pippen, Hakeem Olajuwon, Magic Johnson and James Worthy. That's not a bad list, but he kinda slighted Wardell Stephen "Steph" Curry II when he said, "He's still a great player. Not a Hall of Famer yet, though."
When you look at Chef Curry's accomplishments, it's hard to see why Jordan would think that. Steph is a three time champion and two time MVP, including the only unanimous MVP. He's been to the all star game 6 times, and been on the NBA first team 3 times, second team twice and third team once. He's also a one time scoring champion and led the league in steals in the 2015-16 season.
He ranks 25th in points per game all time, and third in made three pointers all time. He also led the league in threes made for five straight years.
The only stats he isn't doing particularly well in is all time points and all time assists. He's not in the top 50 in either of those. His steals numbers aren't quite up there as well, he has 1200, while Ray Allen, 50th all time in steals, managed 1451.
When Jordan's former teammate Steve Kerr, who doubles as Curry's coach, was asked after a practice about Jordan's comments he said, "I think Michael has his own version of the Hall of Fame. It's in his own head -- so whatever that is, that's what it is."
Ex-Lakers general manager Magic Johnson tweeted: "Everyone relax. We know Steph Curry is a future Hall of Famer...Michael Jordan couldn’t say it because he would get fined by the league."
Magic would know, since he got fined fifty grand when he said Giannis would eventually lead the Bucks to a championship.
"I love MJ. That's my guy. He's obviously ... he's the GOAT," Curry said during an interview released by SiriusXM NBA Radio. "But I don't know if it was a wordsmith thing or if he just kinda got in his own way, but I'm sure if you ask him that question now, like straight-up, does he think I'm getting in there, he probably would have a different answer. If you put the 'yet,' then I'm cool with that."
Jordan was asked if he thought Steph should be offended, to which the GOAT replied, "I hope not."
There's not a doubt in my mind or anyone else's that Steph Curry is a Hall of Famer. Just not "yet".
