The Mustachioed Menace

Updated: Oct 21, 2019

Gardner Minshew the Second, quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars, has become a very interesting topic these last few weeks. This mustachioed rookie came out of nowhere and has led his team to a 2-2 record, which is crazy since he is a backup, the best defensive player wants to leave, and their running back has disappeared for the most part.

Now, ‘Second’ is capitalized, which might seem like an error, but it isn’t. It is capitalized because it is really part of his name. His dad is not Gardner Minshew the first, because his name is Flint. But that’s just the beginning of Minshew’s crazy story.

Gardner played football in high school in Brandon, Mississippi, and he was pretty good. He won a state championship, and threw for 88 touchdowns in 52 games. He started college at Troy University, but transferred to Northwest Mississippi Community College after a semester. His freshman year, in 2015, he led NMCC to a NJCAA National Football Championship. He then transferred to East Carolina, where he started to show people what he could do. He especially showed off his talents at the end of the 2017 season, passing for 350+ yards for 3 straight games.

He then transferred again, this time to Washington State, to get his graduate degree. He led WSU to a school record 11 wins, and Minshew had a passer rating of 147.5 (158.3 is the best rating).

Before we get to his NFL draft/combine and career, let’s see what Gardner Minshew the Second is like.

He often stretches and works out naked. He says that he sometimes only wears shades while he does. However, he also said that he sometimes caves and wears a jockstrap and a headband with the shades.

He is also super smart. In the NFL Combine, the NFL gives quarterbacks a test called the Wonderlic test, which is 50 questions in 12 minutes. He scored a 42, second highest. Take a look at what the Wonderlic is: Good Luck

You don’t have to do all of it, just look through the questions to see how hard it is, and how impressive a 42/50 is.

"If you could have a classroom full of Gardners, it would be wonderful because he made everyone feel like they had a gift or they were special," Robinson told the Pullman Spokesman-Review. "His energy was contagious."

Lastly, he has a dope mustache. The person who recruited him to Washington State said that Minshew did not have a mustache when they talked. So he pretty much grew the best facial hair in sports in a matter of months.

Within weeks of the start of the 2018-19 NCAA Football stadium, everyone in Pullman, WA, where WSU is located, was wearing a fake Minshew mustache.

Gardner Minshew II ready to fly to San Anontio, Texas

Lastly, his grandfather wanted him to be named Beowulf Minshew II, which would be the coolest quarterback name in the history of the NFL.

But back to Gardner’s NFL rookie season. Gardner was picked in the 6th round by Jacksonville, mostly since the Jaguars needed a backup for Nick Foles. And that they certainly did, since Foles was severely injured just minutes into the first game of the season. Also, severely has three e’s??

Anyways, Minshew played his first game against the Chiefs, the second best team in the NFL. He only threw three incomplete passes, but even those were on target, they were just dropped by receivers.

He just completed his 4th game in the NFl, and has thrown for 905 yards, 7 touchdowns and only 1 interception. He is 18th in the NFL for QBR and has a passer rating of 106.9/158.3. He is also in serious consideration for rookie of the year. He’s on track for about 4000 passing yards and 30 touchdowns.

But this story reminded me of another one. The story of Tom Brady. Now, I know what you guys are thinking: ‘A story about a mustached baller and he somehow ropes the Patriots into it??’. That’s right I am roping TB12 and the Pats into the story of The Mustachioed Menace.

Tom Brady, Greatest of all Time, started his career like Minshew started his. Tom Brady, in his second season, came in after Drew Bledsoe was injured. He started the rest of the games, and led the Patriots to a Super Bowl win over the St Louis Rams, winning Super Bowl MVP. He then went on to become ‘the greatest to ever do it’.

Now I’m not saying the Jaguars will win a Super Bowl this year, because the other players are kinda not good. And I’m definitely not saying Minshew will be as good as Tom Brady. But Gardner Minshew II will definitely be as good as Tom Brady.
